Our club was founded in the 1950s. Our membership is mostly adult with many years of experience in the game of chess. Our club participates in the Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Leagues and the Spens Cup (national) with a number of members participating in chess congresses throughout the country and abroad.
In previous years, we successfully won both Glasgow Division 3 and then Division 2. In 2017/18, we were promoted to the highly competitive Glasgow Division 1 and, although the minnows of the Division, we surprised a number of top teams and successfully retained our place in the top Division for 2018/19. After a difficult period in 2018/19 when some key players were not available and relegation looming we, by the smallest of margins, managed to retain our Division 1 position.
In 2018/19, for the first time in the club's history, we participated in the Richardson Cup. Unfortunately, drawn against a much superior team we exited in Round 1.
In 1967, former World Champion Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik visited Bellshill Chess Club and played 25 players in a simultaneous exhibition.
In 2019, club member Jimmy Cumming received a much deserved award for his 37 years service to our club
